A Year in Review: A Look into VDI’s DKD Program

Since commencement of operations in August 2023, VDI Australia’s local assembly program has experienced significant growth, with promising developments heading into 2025. In late 2023, VDI launched its Drivable Knockdown (DKD) program, marking the first-ever local assembly of Yutong battery electric buses in Australia. This initiative quickly expanded with the opening of VDI’s state-of-the-art assembly facility in Eagle Farm, Brisbane. The new facility has enhanced production capacity and streamlined processes, additionally serving as a centre of excellence for technical training and engineering support for all Yutong products.

Expanding in Operations and in Workforce

In just two years, VDI has successfully delivered over 25 buses to this program’s primary customer, Transport Canberra, showcasing the program’s success and its potential for continued growth. This expansion of operations has not only boosted VDI’s sale and assembly productivity but has also contributed to VDI’s exponential growth as a company with their team more than doubling in size since June of 2023.

Along with the addition of experienced professionals specialising in sales, parts and service, VDI have significantly strengthened their in-house capabilities with a skilled team operating out of their Brisbane assembly facility. With this expanded workforce, VDI can not only ensure that each bus meets the highest standards of quality, performance and reliability but they can support the increasing demand for locally assembled, sustainable transport solutions and continue to grow within the industry.

Affirming Strong Relations with Australian Operators

When VDI was awarded this major electric bus tender for Transport Canberra in 2023, it marked a significant milestone for the company’s journey as suppliers of sustainable, high-quality transport solutions that maintain flexibility to adapt to the specific demands of the market. The success of this program just further underscores VDI’s strengths as a trusted and reliable supplier within the Australian transport industry. Through this initiative, VDI not only showcases its technical expertise but also its ability to forge strong partnerships and effectively support customers in their transition to cleaner, more efficient public transport systems. The DKD program is a testament to VDI’s role as an industry leader, capable of driving innovation and fulfilling the evolving needs of Australia’s transport sector.

What 2025 Has in Store for the DKD Program

Looking ahead, VDI is confident that continued growth and expansion will define 2025 across all facets of their operations, including the ongoing success of the DKD program. With a total of 90 buses planned for the program, there is still much to accomplish, but VDI is unwavering in its belief in the program’s potential and its operational capabilities. As the company continues to build on the success of its local assembly efforts, VDI remains focused on scaling up production, enhancing technical expertise, and further proving the adaptability of electric buses in diverse Australian environments. With a clear vision for the future and a commitment to innovation, VDI is poised to lead the way in the evolution of Australia’s transport industry, bringing sustainable, high-performance solutions to operators nationwide.
